In vintage homes the front door can be the single most important and most valuable part of the home. Many vintage front doors have panels secured in place by moldings in a heavy structural framework. The upper panels are glass - stained, etched, or leaded. The lower panels are wood. The framework of the door often had a hardwood veneer stained to match the homes interior.
If your home has an original vintage door don't ever throw it away. These doors are often salvageable even when in bad condition. Panels and veneer can be replaced. Large holes can be fixed. Some common problems are: moisture has gotten under the veneer, holes from old locks and knobs, cracked panels, and dirt.
