There are many different types of siding for homes. Most vintage homes were built with Clapboard, Shiplap, Board & Batten, Cedar Shingles or Stucco. Additionally, Victorian era homes often had Drop Siding or Bevel Siding. Cedar shingles were very popular here in Oregon.
Drop siding is horizontal placed planks 6 to 10 inches wide with flat interlocking panels whose joints have either rounded channels or V-shaped grooves.
Bevel siding includes both clapboard and shiplap.
Shiplap siding is flat and flush and looks a bit like tongue and groove flooring. It may have been installed horizontally or vertically. Single palnks are divided into three beveled tiers with a more pronounced hoizontal line in every three slats. Shiplap is found in many Colonial Revival homes.
Modern siding includes Vinyl, Aluminum, Mineral, Asphalt and concrete based sidings such as Hardi Plank.
